TRI-CITIES - A road in the Village of Anmore was shut down for hours Wednesday after a pedestrian was struck and killed by car.

Coquitlam Mounties said the man was jogging southbound along East Road at 9:30 a.m., when a car heading northbound suddenly swerved across the road, hitting the victim.

The wayward car then ended up back on the road for a few metres before smashing into bushes on the other side of the street.

The jogger died at the scene.

As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, police had yet to identify the victim.

He was not carrying identification at the time.

The deceased is described as a black man, possibly in his 50s with a slim build and a shaved or bald head.

The male driver and female passenger stayed at the scene and are said to be co-operating with police.

RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung said investigators aren't sure why the car ended up hitting the jogger, but he noted the victim was off the road at the time and was "doing all the right things."

"Our main focus is to look for witnesses and find exactly what took place here," he said, adding alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors in the incident.

But the crash has shocked residents living along the usually quiet stretch of road.

John, an Anmore resident living close to the scene, who did not want his last name used, said he saw the jogger on his way to running morning errands shortly before he was hit.

"One minute I see him running, the next minute he was gone," he told The NOW.

John said he didn't recognize the jogger, whom he described as looking like a marathon runner, but noted a neighbour had seen him running in the area before.

The Anmore resident said he's lived in the village for 40 years and deadly crashes are unusual.

"It's really quiet here," he said.

Still, John said he feels bad for the dead man.

"He was doing everything right," he said.

"Life is short. You never know."

The driver was taken back to the Coquitlam RCMP detachment for questioning, but Chung said there is no indication he purposely hit the man.
