I would like to thank City of Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart and council for bringing the issue of local references on highway signs to my attention ("Signs to include names," Wednesday, Feb. 13).
My ministry continues to work with City of Coquitlam and other municipalities to design a plan that addresses both the highways signs used during Cape Horn interchange construction, and for when all of the ramps are completed.
It is important that these highway signs take into account the needs of all motorists, recognizing that local commuters are likely familiar with local names while out-of-town travellers may be following highway numbers.
Construction is continuing on the Port Mann Bridge and along the Highway 1 corridor through 2013. Crews are working to complete the bridge to its full 10-lane capacity, and highway widening and interchange improvements are ongoing through Coquitlam, Burnaby and Vancouver.
Motorists should expect some changes to travel patterns as this work continues and I thank them in advance for their patience.
