PORT MOODY - An industrial building in Port Moody will likely need a new roof after an early morning blaze that kept fire crews busy for several hours.

Port Moody Fire-Rescue received a call of a fire at a building in the 2700 block of Murray Street just after 4 a.m.

By the time crews arrived, the fire had already spread to the roof, causing it to partially collapse.

Adding to the difficulty, the building was well secured and the power and machinery inside were still running.

"It was difficult in the fact there was a fire burning under collapsed roofing materials, and [crews were] working around a structure that's not stable," said deputy fire chief Gord Parker.

The building is home to a metal products company.

Firefighters were kept to the exterior of the building for a time until the power could be shut off.

Despite the size of the blaze, Parker said the building was saved along with some of the equipment inside.

"Fortunately, we were able to keep it contained," he said.

By 8 a.m., crews had the upper hand on the fire and were in the cleanup stage.

The fire shut down Murray for much of the morning, causing heavy delays during the commute.

Fire investigators were expected to be at the scene all day to determine the cause of the blaze.

However, Parker said there is no indication the fire was arson.
