PORT COQUITLAM — It turned out to be quite the Sunday morning wake-up call for Amanda Lefebvre and Nathan Fortier.

The crushing news came from their property manager.

Sometime that morning, a large oak tree managed to fall on top of the Port Coquitlam couple’s car, which was parked outside their Bury Avenue apartment.

“It was like a forest — you couldn’t see the car,” Lefebvre said, describing the scene when she first surveyed the damage.

Parts of the tree smashed her back windshield and caved in the old Toyota’s roof.

Two other cars were parked in the lot at the time, but they didn’t receive as much damage.

Neither Lefebvre nor Fortier, who have lived together in the apartment for a year, heard the tree fall, as they live on the other side of the building, but they weren’t all that surprised to hear the big tree had come down.

Lefebvre noted the tree was growing on an angle.

“I always looked at it, ‘I think it’s going to come down one day,’” she said, adding she wasn’t told what exactly brought down the tree.

While the car, which is a second commuter car for the couple, will likely be a write-off, Lefebvre and Fortier are just glad no one was hurt.

The pair said several cars are usually parked in the lot on a regular basis.

“It could have killed somebody,” Fortier said, noting the occasional branch had fallen from the tree in the past.

Lefebvre said she sits on the building’s strata council and plans to bring up her concerns about some of the other trees on the property.

Cathy Kramell also lives in the apartment complex.

Her mother’s rental car was parked in the lot at the time, but only received scratches and a minor dent.

While she didn’t hear the tree fall either, she said her mom did.

Kramell said her mother described the sound as if someone had dropped a cooler of ice off the roof of the building.

“It’s shocking to see it, but it looked like it’s [the tree] been really unsupportive where it is,” she said.

“It’s just nature; it happens. The good thing is no one is hurt.”

Despite the buckling tree, Kramell said she feels the apartment is safe, adding the building is well maintained.

There is still no word on exactly what brought down the tree.
