Anytime the Pleasantside Elementary students want to hang out, they have to cross the street. Anyone who has traversed Ioco knows the speed limits aren't always obeyed.

For years, crossing the street has been a nervous endeavor for Lucy, Caitlin and their parents.

"It's really busy and most people are speeding," Caitlin told The NOW.

"We've had to tolerate the road for quite a while."

Lucy and Caitlin insist it's not just the kids, but adults too who get anxious crossing the street.

The girls said they were promised a crosswalk along that stretch of road a few years back, but the white stripes never came.

Again, not much can separate these two friends. So they did what any good besties would do when faced with a road-sized problem.

They worked together on a plan. During the summer, the pair went door-to-door in their neighbourhood gathering the signatures of about 50 residents for a petition requesting a crosswalk for Ioco.

They weren't done. Like anyone looking to grease the wheels at City Hall, they met with the mayor and lobbied hard.

At Tuesday night's regular council meeting, Lucy and Caitlin took their case to the local politicians as a delegation.

They asked for a crosswalk.

It turns out the city already has plans to install a crosswalk at Campbell in 2014.

But the two girls want to see the safety measure in place sooner.

Council recommended staff look at the request and prepare a report for a discussion at the next meeting on Oct. 23.

Following their presentation, the girls said they felt pretty confident council would see the issue their way and approve the crosswalk ahead of schedule.

And like friends who do everything together, the pair vows to be back at council chambers in two weeks to hear the fate of their request.
