Former Port Moody mayor Joe Trasolini received recognition Tuesday when Town Centre Field was renamed in his honour.

The newly named Trasolini Field, located behind the recreation complex, was dedicated to the politician who served three years on council and 12 years as mayor.

"It's a very humbling experience to have something named after you," Trasolini said Wednesday. "I want to thank Mayor (Mike) Clay and council - the past and present council - for that recognition. And again, I want to thank all the previous councils for seeing through their commitment to young people."

The field has special meaning to Trasolini, who coached minor sports in the community for 19 years.

"To me, it is a symbol of investment by the taxpayers of Port Moody to promote positive activity in young people.

I think it's great for taxpayers in Port Moody to have such a facility for minor sports and youth activity. So it's more about that than me," said Trasolini, who was involved in soccer, baseball and T-ball.

"One of these days, I want to get back into coaching. It's something that might be in my future, as long as I'm healthy and outgoing and I can do those sort of things . I really encourage and compliment parents who get their kids involved in youth sports," he said.

Trasolini chose not to run in the recent civic election, instead vying for the MLA spot in the upcoming Port Moody Coquitlam byelection.
