COQUITLAM — Usually it’s the police reporting scams in the community, but in this case, it’s their firefighting brethren.

Reps with the Coquitlam Fire and Rescue Services are asking members of the public to be vigilant in light of a recent spate of instances that involve individuals asking businesses to install coin-operated breathalyzers in their business.

Claiming to be members of the “Burn Victims Aid Society,” those behind the scam are claiming that all proceeds will go to the Coquitlam Fire Fighters Burn Fund or other fire service-related charities.

“These individuals are implying that they are either a Coquitlam firefighter or someone having direct association with the Coquitlam Fire Department,” fire chief Tony Delmonico said in a press release. “Coquitlam Fire/Rescue and Coquitlam Fire Fighters Charitable Society do not condone, support or are in any way associated with this company or the cause that these parties claim they are representing, namely, Burn Victims Aid Society.”

Anyone approached with this offer is asked to call the Coquitlam RCMP’s non- emergency number at 604-945-1550.
