There is a song that is currently on the radio called "Hurt Me Tomorrow" by Somali-Canadian artist, K'naan.
And every time I hear this song I go into a self-contained rage where I sit and think to myself about how much I truly hate it.
Before you say something like, "Why don't you just turn off the radio?," I am forced to listen to a Top 40 radio station the entire time at my job. If I could turn it off and listen to my own music, I would.
I'd like to start off by saying that this is not an attack on K'naan because he seems like an OK guy. He wrote that "Wavin' Flag" song that was used in some big sporting event or whatever, I don't really care.
But the song itself is such a terrible message that it makes me want to throw myself into an active volcano.
The song is basically saying "Hey girlfriend, I know you have some problems with our relationship but let's not talk about it because my feelings matter more than yours."
Let's analyze the chorus, shall we? "This ain't a good time/But when is it ever?/I know the perfect time/And baby that's never/So don't you dare leave me now/Throw my heart on the ground/Cause tonight ain't the night for sorrow/But you can hurt me tomorrow."
The first half of the chorus is pretty self-explanatory, he doesn't want to talk about their issues right then and there so he suggests, oh let's just talk about it never. In the sixth line he gets threatening, don't you DARE leave me.
What would he do to her if she did leave him? Is it suggesting an abusive relationship? That's for you to decide. After that he straight up lies and says "you can hurt me tomorrow" and I'm pretty sure that the next day he'd just end up avoiding the talk again.
The reason why this song makes me so angry is the fact that it's making this situation seem very cute and light-hearted.
Guess what? A failing relationship is not a very cute thing at all.
A relationship is two people. If one person is not completely happy, then you have to either work on the issue or drop the relationship completely.
Avoiding the problem is not one of the choices. A one-sided relationship can lead to cheating and lying, which would lead to an even more tragic heartbreak than if they had dealt with the problem earlier.
If you're in a relationship and you're starting to feel not-as-into-them as you were before, I suggest that you talk to them about it.
Imagine being on the other side of the relationship. You're dating this awesome person and then you're informed that they never even liked you that much. The relationship was a lie and now you're sad and curled up in a ball on your bed and listening to Adele.
You wouldn't want that would you? Nobody does. If you start feeling like your boyfriend/girlfriend likes you less than you like them, just tell them that. Unfortunately, you two might end up breaking up but it would still be for the better.
What I'm basically trying to say here is just deal with your problems as soon as you can. Whether it's a problem in a relationship or in school or somebody is just walking too slowly in front of you, do your best to get rid of the problem.
Procrastination is stupid, just do it now. Really, go.
