COQUITLAM- A crew of hardworking volunteers took to the water around Belcarra Park and Twin Islands and hoisted out a variety of discarded flotsam last week in the Beyond the Shoreline Cleanup.

Led by the Coquitlam and Burnaby Power and Sail Squadrons, the cleanup saw a haul of eight crab traps, numerous sunglasses, fishing poles, pop and beer cans, kitchen utensils, several kayak paddles, a tire and assorted locks and gear, as well as a golf ball.

Much of the harvest of garbage was done last Saturday.

Organizer Bill Marshall of Coquitlam said it appeared many of the items had fallen overboard unintentionally, demonstrating that boaters are picking up the message of not using the waterways as a dumping ground.

It was just one of a number of Shoreline Cleanup efforts that took place throughout the Lower Mainland.
