It was another cold night for the Coquitlam Search and Rescue team attempting to rescue a man from the Buntzen Lake area.

He had fallen into a creek and needed help making his way out.

As Coquitlam SAR manager Dwight Yochim described the situation, the team was waiting until daylight to perform the rescue, so they were out on the mountain for the evening.

But in the darkness, shone a beam of headlights.

It was Roland Webb, or Rollie as friends and family knew him, pulling up to greet the team.

Webb pulled out a big flask of coffee to keep his team warm in the cold black.

"I tell you, it was the best coffee I ever had," Yochim told The NOW.

It's one of the many stories likely being shared among friends, family and colleagues following Webb's death last Thursday.

The Anmore resident was killed that morning when a dump trunk hit him as he crossed East Road near Hummingbird Drive.

A public funeral is being held on Friday at Our Lady of Assumption Church in Port Coquitlam.

In the days since, a number of tributes and condolences have been offered in memory of the 37-year-old father of two children, who was a supervisor at BC Ambulance and a member of Coquitlam SAR.

Yochim described Webb as a "real go-getter" who trained half of the current SAR team.

"He was always helpful, a bit of a mentor for everyone," he told The NOW.

Webb had been a member of the organization since 2002, after stints with Salt Spring Island, Surrey and Lion's Bay search and rescue teams.

He was part of Coquitlam's helicopter rescue team.

As a person, Yochim said Webb always seemed to get involved in activities that helped people, whether it was with the Coast Guard or providing his medical services to local clubs for events.

Yochim also considered his teammate a "fantastic family man" whose kids were always at SAR events.

"It's going to be a big hole on the team for quite a while," he said.

Ridge Meadows SAR team leader Richard Laing wrote: "I was shocked and saddened when I heard the news. I had the pleasure of working with Rollie on many searches and could always count on him to bring not just his skills but also his good sense of humour.

"His passing will leave a large hole in not only many people's hearts but the SAR Community as well."

Anmore Village Coun. Tracy Green tweeted: "Keeping in my thoughts those family and friends that are suffering so greatly because of the loss of Roland Webb."

As for the crash, Coquitlam Mounties are still investigating, but are saying little about a possible cause.

The driver of the truck remained on scene and was co-operating with police.

Webb leaves behind two children, Abbie and Ethan, his brother Sean, who is an officer in the Vancouver Police Department, and is survived by his ex-wife Tracey, along with his father and his girlfriend Helena.
