COQUITLAM — It’s going to be another nasty weekend if you’re planning to drive through Highway 1 or the Cape Horn Interchange, as traffic is choked off during construction work.

Highway 1 will be reduced to one lane in each direction while crews work to demolish the remaining sections of the old Cape Horn overpass.

“Drivers should absolutely avoid that part of Highway 1 and choose an alternate route,” said Max Logan, Port Mann Highway 1 improvement project spokesman. “If they’re planning to head out of Coquitlam and go to Surrey, almost any other crossing would be better than taking their chances on highway because it will be extremely congested.”

Traffic was clogged last weekend while workers connected the new overpass and began bringing down the old one. Because the old one passes above Highway 1, lanes will be closed for driver and worker safety.

While the project is far from being complete, this is expected to be the last time it will lead to significant lane closures and delays for drivers, Logan said.

“Our big push right now is in Coquitlam at the Cape Horn Interchange, and making sure [it] is connected to the Port Mann Bridge. There is still a lot of work that’s required between now and December,” he said. “We’re asking drivers just to hang in there for a little bit longer until we can get through this work.”
