As parents of a young child at Glen Elementary and residents of the highrise building at Glen and Pipeline, we are very concerned for our child's safety.
Each and every day, we walk our child to and from school, crossing at the pedestrian crosswalk with him (and another little one, who is often in a stroller). On any given day at any given time before drop off in the morning and pick up in the afternoon, you will find parents driving like lunatics.
I cannot tell you how many times I have been waiting in the crosswalk to cross Glen at Eastwood and a parent has gone "flying" through the crosswalk, oblivious to the fact that I am standing there with two little ones.
Not only is it a school zone and the maximum speed limit is 30 kilometres, but also these parents have just finished dropping off their own child. Just this morning, a mom saw me waiting in the crosswalk [and] actually accelerated and went speeding through the crosswalk.
When I screamed at her as she whizzed through the crosswalk, she looked at me as if she had done absolutely nothing wrong.
Does a child or a parent need to be struck in the crosswalk and badly injured or worse? Does someone have to lose their life because some parent was in a rush to drop off or pick up their child?
The City of Coquitlam needs to put in speed bumps, there needs to be a crossing guard before and after school or the RCMP have to be present to ensure that our children are kept safe. I am sure that this is an ongoing problem at every school in the district and I am fully aware that the schools no longer have a large budget for these types of expenditures, but a solution needs to be found before something drastic happens.
