I am a practising catholic and a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church. Church bell tolling in most Christian countries is widely accepted without too much fuss, or that is the way it has been for many years. The present day world we live in is vastly different to what it was just 50 years ago. The beauty of the bell tolling is not appreciated by everyone.
Area residents were fully aware of the belfry before and when it was being built, but said very little or nothing. As with most things in life, both sides have to comprise at a roundtable discussion. Rev. Thompson is trying to reduce the sound emitted from the bell at the present time. Council is meeting again to find a common ground settlement that would appease both parties. May I suggest that the tolling of the bells every hour be curtailed and only sounded each day before a church service, be it in the morning or evening or both if and when warranted and major feasts as and when they occur.
