A breach of web servers at a number of municipalities in B.C. appears to have included the Tri-Cities.
The City of Port Moody had its pre-authorized withdrawal system (PAWS) and MyCity portal software hacked on July 22.
Dave Teixeira, the city's project manager of civic engagement, explained that someone managed to implant a code on the computer system that instructed the server to send out spam or junk mail.
He said an initial scan indicates no information was taken, but the city is bringing in an independent security consultant to review the system.
"More importantly, what the city focused on was making sure the system was resecured," Teixeira told the Tri-Cities NOW.
The city is also sending out 1,900 letters to clients who use the PAWS system and another 900 e-mails to those who use the MyCity portal to let them know of the breach.
Teixeira noted the two systems don't store credit card information, social insurance numbers or driver's licences, but the hackers could have had access to generic banking information like bank account numbers.
The city also asked the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act commissioner to review the breach and city's response.
Teixeira said the city wants to hear from people if they have any issues related to the breach.
"It's certainly not a great thing, but it's how we react and inform people [which is important]," he said.
As of Wednesday, two people had come down to City Hall to cancel their PAWS account.
The City of Port Coquitlam said it became aware of an automated attempt to compromise all municipalities that use the MyCity module on July 21.
According to an e-mail from a city spokesperson, PoCo's information services division took action by deactivating the MyCity system for a few days to run a variety of diagnostics and tests.
The division reviewed all logs and files and determined that none of the residents' data was accessed, compromised or tampered with.
PoCo has replaced the MyCity server with a completely new system that has been securely patched and updated as per the vendor's recommendations.
