Look up - waaayyy up.
The Coquitlam Express are going to have a bit in common with the Friendly Giant next season, as the B.C. Hockey League board of governors voted in favour of a realignment scheme last week that will see the creation of three divisions.
The move means that the 10-team Coastal Conference will be split into two divisions -the Island and Mainland divisions - with the Express lining up alongside Surrey, Langley, Chilliwack and Prince George in the Mainland division.
The shift in alignment will come into place next year, and Prince George will be given the option to move back into the Interior Conference after the 2013 playoffs.
That change means the Express will take on Prince George eight times next year - four apiece in each team's building.
"One of the things that we're hearing and the fans have been clear about this, is that they want to see every team in the league in their building at least once," said Express general manager and president Darcy Rota, a Prince George native himself.
What that means for the playoffs, however, remains to be seen. Teams have been given until Feb. 1 to submit proposals to the league.
One scenario that could play out would see four of the five teams from both the Island and Mainland divisions advance, while the final two Interior teams would play a best-of-nine series.
Coquitlam hosts Victoria tonight (Friday) at 7 p.m. as part of Emergency Services Recognition Night.
