Sparked by sharpshooter Justin Buren, the Centennial Centaurs rebounded to top Wellington 64-53 and finish third overall at the G.P. Vanier tournament on Vancouver Island.
Buren posted 29 points and earned a spot on the first all-star team with his performance over the tourney.
The Cents began the day with a hard 67-55 loss to Vanier in the semifinal, erasing a 13-point deficit to pull within three before the Courtenay squad pulled away. Buren tallied a game-high 33 points.
"Our guys just battled. We were down 13 and got it to three a few times," remarked Centaur coach Alan Kaselj. "We just couldn't get over the hump."
They opened action on Friday by blasting Highland 6038, behind Buren's 22 points and 10 points from Karn Johal.
