Coquitlam aims at repeat World Series ticket

They've been there, done that. Now it's time to do it again.

The Coquitlam junior A's enter this weekend's Canadian Little League Junior baseball championships focused on doing what they've done before.

The defending national champions and two-time provincial champs, the A's have an advantage as the six-team tourney hits the Lethbridge, Alta. diamond tomorrow.

And with four players from last year's World Series squad on the roster, experience could play a major factor for the 13-14 year old club.

"We have four kids from last year's team that have played in these kinds of games, they played significant roles as 13 year olds and are playing greater roles this year," head coach Wes Taylor said. "They've seen what happens at this stage."

Those 'veterans' -- pitcher-infielder Brandon Becking, catcher-outfielder Javeed Khankashi, pitcher Austin MacDonald, and pitcher-infielder Curtis Taylor -- have given the grass-green rookie lineup lots of leadership.

In the past six weeks, the squad has been very busy -- collecting its B.C. title with an 8-3 win over Whalley two weeks ago, playing in a few tourneys -- but coach Taylor notes that since the B.C. final there has been a void.

"You run into this every year, it's a long layoff between the B.C.s and the nationals, so it's hard to keep their focus."

Keeping the teens sharp and focused is a challenge at the best of times. This group, he said, has been in tune with the overall gameplan, he said.

One aspect that will be a boon is that the first-year juniors have heard all the stories and seen the rewards from last year's run.

"They want to get their name on that trophy, too," the coach added.

The A's are deep at pitching which should help them through a long tourney, Taylor said. If they happen to achieve their goal, the journey will take them from Lethbridge to the Junior World Series in Taylor, MI right away.

"These are my holidays," Taylor quipped. "I'm fine with making it as long as possible."

Coquitlam kicks off the tournament tomorrow against the Maritime champions. A Canadian champion will be crowned Aug. 12.
