As of Tuesday evening, Coquitlam's junior little league side was on the cusp of making history repeat itself -- again.
Representing the 13/14 age group, the junior A's were slated to take on their archrivals from Whalley in the B.C. finals Tuesday night after NOW deadlines. Had they won the contest, it would mark a huge first step towards Coquitlam laying claim to three straight national titles.
"We're quietly confident," said A's manager Wes Taylor. "The boys have seen the pitching that we'll see [Tuesday night], and I'm pretty sure that they're confident that they can get the job done. They have to play error-free baseball and that's the key."
Coquitlam already passed its first two major hurdles in the provincial dance, downing Whalley 4-3 in the tourney opener before defeating North Vancouver Central 12-5.
Though Whalley quickly made it 2-0 in Saturday's opener, Coquitlam responded with back-to back doubles by Austin MacDonald and Alex Romanowski in the third inning.
Tied 3-3 after seven, the game headed to extra innings, where Kevin Heidema laid down a pinch-hit bunt to cash in the winning run in a bases-loaded situation.
"It was a beauty. Everyone was crashing the plate and it just went right by them. Our runner at third was breaking on the pitch and that won it for us. It was a pretty tight, intense game," Taylor said.
The A's then marched past North Van Central one day later on the weight of Johnathan Keltie's six-strikeout performance. The offence came courtesy of Javeed Khankashi (two singles), Anderson (2 RBIs) and Heidema and Curtis Taylor, who each notched an RBI as well.
Even if the A's didn't dispatch of Whalley Tuesday, the club will live to see another day due to the tournament's double knockout format. Had Whalley won Tuesday, the two teams would square off Wednesday in a winner-take-all contest.
