Coquitlam's junior A's are once again in familiar territory.
The A's dusted off Whalley 8-3 in the back half of a two-game set Wednesday to capture B.C. baseball supremacy in the 13/14 age grouping. The victory came one night after Whalley doubled up the A's 2-1.
"The boys were really relaxed on Wednesday, to the point that it was pretty surprising. But they approached the game the right way and got the job done," said A's coach Wes Taylor.
Wednesday's win represents the club's third straight B.C. crown and locks up Coquitlam's spot in the Canadian championships set for the first week of August.
Up 1-0 heading into the fourth inning, the A's broke the contest open with four runs.Kevin Heidema and Brandon Becking both tallied a pair of RBIs in the fourth before Whalley responded with two in the fifth to move the score to 5-2.
The A's poured it on in the seventh again, as Curtis Taylor and Becking each chipped in an RBI, while Alex Hunt cashed in two.
Though Whalley would get one more in the seventh, Heidema began the game-ending play with a seeing-eye toss from the outfield, one that was relayed to home plate in time to nab Whalley's last out.
Starting pitcher Johnathan Keltie shone in his five-and-two-thirds worth of work, striking out a pair and allowing two runs, before handing the ball over to closer Austin MacDonald.
Tuesday's opener was a defensive stalemate for the most part, as neither team was able to score until the fifth, when Coquitlam's Javeed Khankashi's RBI brought Cameron Williams across the plate to give the A's the 1-0 lead.
Whalley, however, would answer back with a run in both the seventh and eighth innings to steal the win.
"Our pitcher Mitchell Anderson was great in that game, and he kept it scoreless through five," Taylor said. "Once Brandon [Becking] came in, Whalley just kept chipping away and we couldn't do anything in the bottom of the seventh. They shut us down in the eighth."
Coquitlam's championship win mirrors the way the club got it done last year as well. Faced with a double knockout scenario, the A's dropped their first contest against White Rock before rebounding for a Game 2 win and the B.C. pennant.
According to Taylor, the lessons from that journey were applied to this year's.
"I said to the boys, 'We've been here before, we've done this before. Let's go out and do it again,'" he said. "They stayed the course and that experience paid off."
The A's now advance to next month's Canadian championships in Lethbridge.
Coquitlam's major A's side saw their season come to an end last Sunday after a 5-0 loss to Whalley in the district finals.
The squad of 11-and-12 year olds got things started on the right foot by downing Langley 9-0 in the tournament opener, but then dropped their first of two contests against Whalley 11-0. From there, the majors lost Game 3 by a 14-1 count at the hands of White Rock, though the club bounced back with a 7-3 win over North Langley in the semis.
