The Surrey and North Delta sports community is in mourning this week following the passing of long-time volunteer Glenn Zwick.

A former iceman with the City of Surrey, Zwick passed away at Surrey Memorial Hospital on Feb. 23 at the age of 59 following a lengthy illness.

Zwick spent countless hours over 30 years volunteering with sports organizations in Surrey and North Delta and his impact is reflected in an impressive array of honours. These included induction into the Canadian Rec Hockey Association hall of fame as a builder in 2010, being named the Delta Sports Hall of Fame volunteer of the year in 2011 and was being selected as North Delta Minor Hockey's coach of the year in 2010-11.

Zwick revived high school hockey in Surrey, watching the league grow from five teams in 1995 to today where there are 16 schools competing annually for the Zwick Cup.

In 2010-11, he started a similar program for Delta schools.

Zwick was also a long-time organizer of the South Fraser Hockey League and under his stewardship, the league grew from four to 16 teams.

In addition to his activities in ice rinks, Zwick was involved in minor softball in North Delta and dabbled in poetry.

Funeral services will take place Saturday, March 3 at 2 p.m. at Northwood United Church (156th Street and 88th Avenue) in Newton.
