Like their team name, the Coquitlam Express are prone to picking up steam.

The B.C. Hockey League club bounced back from a tough 2-1 loss Friday to the Surrey Eagles with triumphs over the Victoria Grizzlies and Nanaimo Clippers to pick up four of a possible six points over the weekend.

Closing their three-games-in-three-days tour, Coquitlam demonstrated plenty of clout in blasting Nanaimo 5-2 on Island ice Sunday.

Alexander Kerfoot scored twice - including the eventual game winner - and set up two others as Coquitlam improved to 6-2-0 on the year.

"The biggest thing for us [in Nanaimo] was having Alexander break out and finally get his goals - he'd been playing well but this was an unusual streak for him," remarked Express coach Jon Calvano. "I think overall, the weekend saw our offence step up a little more and our defence remained pretty strong."

Jace Hennig and John Siemer posted a 2-0 start for Coquitlam in the first period, with Siemer's marker coming with one second left. Although the Clippers countered, Kerfoot restored the two-goal lead with a powerplay tally. In the third, he added another and rookie Zachary Pryzbek picked up his third of the season.

In Victoria a day earlier, Callum Hofford's point shot with 1: 41 remaining in the third proved to be the difference in a 3-2 win. Also picking up their first goals of the season were rookie Luca Leone and Hennig.

The club's success to date hinged upon the stellar netminding of 20year-old Cole Huggins and the polished play of the six newcomers on the blueline.

Those keys remained true in all three games - but getting the offence on track was a big plus. Not that they hadn't been creating chances, Calvano said, but Friday's setback was similar to their only other loss where a hot goalie was the difference.

"It'd be tough if we didn't generate scoring opportunities, but we did."

The club's next test comes Friday, 7 p.m. at the Poirier Sports Centre when the Chilliwack Chiefs visit. The two teams will then square off Saturday in Chilliwack.
