It's the kind of start that they wanted.
As of today, only one team is sitting pretty.
The Riverside Rapids and Gleneagle Talons launched the senior girls Fraser Valley basketball championships on Monday with victories, with No. 2 seed Riverside clobbering Sardis 8739, while No. 7 Gleneagle topped Lord Tweedsmuir 51-33.
That put the two district rivals into yesterday's quarterfinal showdown (past The NOW's deadline), with the winner advancing into Friday's semifinal and claiming one of the Valley's four automatic B.C. berths.
The loser, meanwhile, will be in the mix for one of four other potential wildcard berths.
Riverside got 20 points and six rebounds from Dani Antignani in its win over Sardis. Contributing with 16 points and three steals was Fiona Beales, while Vanessa Gee chipped in 14 points. Posting a team-high eight rebounds was Megan Cornish.
The Talons, meanwhile, defeated Tweedsmuir behind the Yee sister combination that accounted for 33 points.
Brittani Yee scored a game-high 18, while sister Breanna added 15.
In other opening round play, No. 8 seeded Yale tipped past No. 9 Terry Fox 69-44, and No. 5 W.J. Mouat hammered No. 12 Centennial.
Both Fox and Centennial faced must-win situations yesterday against North Surrey and Panorama Ridge, respectively.
