Behind two polished pitching performances, the Coquitlam Reds pulled out a sweep of the Vancouver Cannons on Sunday.

Led by pitchers Austin MacDonald and Jeff Heidema, the Reds knocked off the Cannons 6-3 and 3-2 in a pair of B.C. Premier Baseball League games at Mundy Park.

In the opener, Coquitlam erased a 2-1 deficit with five runs in the fifth to swamp Vancouver. Patience at the plate was responsible for much of the scoring, as the Cannons pitcher walked four straight Reds, including free passes to both Tyler Yorko and Jordan Zazulak with the bases loaded.

Driving in a pair with a double was Max Hollingworth.

Heidema, meanwhile, tossed six solid innings, giving up three unearned runs while walking four himself.

Rookie Curtis Taylor took over in the seventh and registered three quick outs for the save.

A day later, MacDonald held the Cannons to just four hits over seven innings, while fanning four.

"Austin got us off to a great start," remarked Reds manager Kyle Williams. "He stayed down with his pitches right from the start, and it was probably the best I've seen any of our pitchers with strikes at the knees.

"He set the tone for us in that game."

Again, Vancouver scored first and led 2-0 in the fourth. Coquitlam cut it to 2-1 in the fifth, then plated two in the sixth when Brandon Becking and Darren Honeysett scored.

Honeysett's run came on a rehearsed steal of home, when the Cannon pitcher tried to catch the Reds runner on first off base.

"We spend a lot of time working on what we call a first-and-third gadget play. It's something that we throw in with two on and two out."

The two wins set Coquitlam up to 18-17 and sixth overall in the BCPBL standings.

The squad began a busy stretch yesterday (Tuesday) when they hosted North Shore. Tonight (Wednesday) they travel to Whalley to play the Chiefs, followed by Thursday's doubleheader in Langley.
