PETERBOROUGH, ONT. - The Langley Thunder are doing their best to break a historical trend.

The Western Lacrosse Association champions grabbed a 2-0 series lead on Sunday with a 15-14-overtime victory over the Ontario champion Peterborough Lakers in the best-of-seven Mann Cup lacrosse championships.

Port Moody native Jon Iannucci scored four times, including what proved to be the game winner midway through the 10-minute overtime period, to put the visitors in the driver's seat.

No B.C. team has won a Mann Cup in Ontario since New Westminster did it in 1986. Despite that history - as the national senior lacrosse championship alternates annually between B.C. and Ontario hosts - Langley has looked hungry and gunning for revenge.

A year ago, the team put up a valiant battle before falling to the Brampton Excelsiors in the national final in Langley.

After claiming the B.C. title by eliminating the Coquitlam Adanacs in six games, the Thunder have stepped up their game to complete the mission it came close to achieving last year.

The John Grant Jr.-led Lakers now have their backs to the wall - and could be without their star player after Grant left Sunday's game with a possible knee injury.

Iannucci also chipped in three assists. Teammate Garrett Billings scored three goals and set up seven others to lead the Thunder. Joel McCready also connected for a hat trick.

Langley was outshot 53-41 in the contest, but former Coquitlam junior Adanac netminder Brodie McDonald was a fortress in the crease when needed.

In Game 1, the Thunder edged Peterborough 13-12 behind Iannucci's seven-point performance.

The series continues tonight (Monday), with Game 4 slated for Wednesday. All games are hosted by Peterborough.
