COQUITLAM Apparently, honesty still counts for something.
Coquitlams Susan MacRae ran an honest race Sunday at the Vancouver Sun Run and placed second overall among the womens 50-54 age group.
A few days later it was revealed that MacRaes time of 42 minutes 29 seconds was actually the fastest time, when officials stripped Neena Cheema of her first-place prize.
Cheema, who crossed the finish line 45 seconds ahead of MacRae, was deemed to have taken a short cut along the 10-kilometre route.
Mohammed Razak, who topped the mens 55-59 age group, was also relieved of his first-place award for the same reason.
Were absolutely appalled, organizer spokesperson Jamie Pitblado told the Vancouver Sun. Its unfair for the tens of thousands of people who participate for the love of the sport or the community aspect of it and who do so fair and square. We wont stand for it.
MacRaes time was two seconds quicker than Irene Jonker of Delta.
In the mens 54-49 category, PoCos Dave Frilund moved up to third place with a time of 38:18 minutes, just 2:14 behind winner Gary Duncan of Victoria.
Port Moodys Natasha Fraser won the womens race in a time of 32:42, while Coquitlams Kevin Friesen posted the eighth fastest time overall, at 30:32, and finished fourth among men 25-29.
Other winners in their respective age groups include Eino Kyynarainen of Coquitlam, who finished first in the mens 85-89 group in 1:36.20, and Port Moodys Verna Conrad, who topped the womens 60-64 division with a time of 45:50.
