PORT COQUITLAM — For the second time this year, an inmate has died in the North Fraser Pre-Trial Centre in Port Coquitlam.

Emergency crews were called to the prison Monday evening after corrections staff found an inmate in his cell in medical distress, according to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT).

Attempts were made to revive the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The inmate was identified as David William Brodrick, 44.

IHIT has been called in to investigate, while BC Corrections will be conducting a Critical Incident Review to examine the circumstances of the death.

"We are working with BC Corrections to determine what occurred in the cell of Mr. Brodrick prior to his death," said IHIT Cpl. Adam MacIntosh, in a statement.

In April, an inmate at the facility reportedly jumped from the third storey of the building to his death.

Although there have been reports the April death was a possible suicide, the B.C. Coroners Service couldn’t confirm any details surrounding the incident.

The coroners’ service did confirm the identity of that inmate as Roland Joseph Bourque, 69.

An investigation into that death was also launched by the coroners’ service.
