COQUITLAM — They’re likely the last people to get an invite to a party, but that won’t stop Coquitlam Mounties.

The department said it plans to be a party-pooper during the long weekend, busting up any so-called “Project X” parties held in the city.

Coquitlam RCMP received word of a mega party that was supposed to happen Friday (Aug. 31) at a home in the Como Lake Village area.

Police noted more than 1,000 invitations were sent out via social media including instructions for party-goers to meet at Lougheed SkyTrain station and head to Coquitlam Centre before proceeding to the home.

Local Mounties are warning anyone with plans to attend one of the parties that police are aware and are committed to making sure those plans fall through.

"We are well aware of the Project X party trend and we know from watching what's happened in other jurisdictions that if these parties happen, they get out of control very fast," said RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung in a statement.

"Anyone planning to throw one of these events or go to one in our area should know that we are doing everything we can to be the ultimate party-poopers."

The RCMP also note they will be speaking with youth, scouring social media sites and stepping up patrols and road checks during the last weekend of summer and the first few weeks of school.

The RCMP in Langley just last week was on the lookout for a similar party.

The detachment stepped up patrols in the Walnut Grove area, but ultimately no one showed.

Police in that community also got wind of the possible party through social media sites, even deeming it a possible hoax.

Project X is a movie about a group of teens who decide to throw a big party, which ends up getting out of control, eventually destroying the neighbourhood.
