PORT MOODY — In the wake of Port Moody’s third murder of the year, a rally is being planned for City Hall Monday night.

Shortly after the most recent shooting on Saturday, flyers began circulating around the community by a group called Port Moody Families Against Violence.

The flyer asks residents to bring friends and neighbours to the rally to “put pressure on City Hall to end shootings in Port Moody.”

The rally is being called for 6:30 p.m.

Port Moody police were called to a home in the 900 Block of Wallace Wynd in the Glenayre area just after 10 a.m. Saturday to a report of shots fired.

A 32-year-old man who had been shot was rushed to hospital, but he died a couple of hours later.

While police have not officially named the man, several media outlets have identified him as Joey Markel of Port Moody.

He is believed to be an associate of the Dhak-Duhre gang.

Investigators said the victim is "well-known" to police, but wouldn't confirm whether he was involved in gangs.

Police also wouldn't say whether the man was shot inside or outside the home.

Several streets in the area were taped off, as officers combed the area looking for evidence and speaking to potential witnesses.

There are no suspects, and the investigation is being handled by the Vancouver Police Department.

Several residents in the neighbourhood told The NOW the home where the shooting occurred was rumored to be a site of drug activity, while others said the family had been living in the house for years.

Another person living near the home said she saw a man in his 20s running down the street shortly before police arrived on scene.

One resident, who only wanted to use her first name, Sherry, said she poked her head out of her house when she saw police, but was told by an officer to get back inside.

She couldn't recall any type of incident like a shooting previously in the area, describing the neighbourhood as a place out of the 1950s.

However, Sherry also said she isn't that surprised to see a shooting so close to home.

"It's everywhere,” she said. “You’re not immune.”

Residents who spoke to The NOW said they felt the neighbourhood was generally safe. It's a feeling echoed by Port Moody police, despite a third deadly shooting in as many months.

"Unfortunately, there is a lot of stuff going on in the Lower Mainland. No community is immune to this stuff," said Port Moody police spokesperson Const. Luke Van Winkel.

"Port Moody is a safe town. The citizens here are safe."

On June 25, gangster Randy Naicker was gunned down on busy Queens Street during rush hour.

Naicker was the founder of the Independent Soldiers and had a criminal past. In May, another gangster, Gurbinder Singh Toor, was gunned down in the parking lot of the Port Moody Recreation Complex.

The victim was exiting his car to play ball hockey when he was shot. Both of those murders remain unsolved.
