COQUITLAM — It was a particularly violent weekend in Coquitlam, following a triple stabbing late Friday night.

Mounties were called to the 400 block of Westview Street to a report of 20 people fighting in front of an apartment building just before midnight.

By the time police arrived, the majority of the group had scattered, but four people were still at the scene, including three men suffering from stab wounds.

The men, all in their early 20s, received minor injuries from the altercation.

The various injuries on the victims included stab wounds to the abdomen, face and arms.

Investigators are still not sure what sparked the fight, nor do they have any suspects in mind, noting the two sides did not know each other.

“Somebody said the wrong thing and one thing led to another,” RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung said, adding it appeared the large group might have been coming from a party.

Police did speak to a third-party witness in the building, who actually went out to help break up the fight.

Investigators are looking for additional witnesses and are asking anyone with information to call the detachment at 604-945-1550 and quote file number 2012-22035.

Chung said the neighbourhood isn’t a hot spot for trouble, but he noted a particular incident in the area a few months back.

A man was beaten by a group of people as he walked home from work one night.

“There are quite a few people there that enjoy the night too much sometimes,” Chung said.

A couple of weeks ago, a man was beaten a few blocks away on Austin Street.

In the July 27 incident, a man was sent to hospital suffering from a serious head wound after an altercation at a bus stop.

Police at the time also didn’t have a suspect or a motive for the fight.
