PoCo wants new and old photos for exhibit

Port Coquitlam residents are invited to submit photos, art, poetry, video and animation - new or old - for an innovative multimedia exhibit celebrating the city's 100th birthday in early 2013.

Prizes, including a digital camera, a $100 gift certificate from Framing & Art Centre in Coquitlam Centre, and a parks and recreation gift card, are being offered for photos and material submitted for Illuminating Port Coquitlam, which will run from February to March 2013 in the Port Coquitlam Recreation Complex lobby.

The exhibit will express the passage of time and the changing of places and people from the City of Port Coquitlam's incorporation on March 7, 1913 to today, according to a press release.

A digital art installation, projected nightly on the lobby's large screen, will feature images that superimpose old and new scenes.

The entries of art, poetry and video/animation will be showcased in the stories unfolding every night for the duration of the exhibit. Photos and materials may be submitted until Nov. 2, and all entries will go into a prize draw.

Art, poetry and video/animation created in the last 100 years by current and former residents are welcomed. The photos may have been taken any time in the last century and may feature modern or historic sites, celebrations, landmark buildings or settings, commercial or industrial areas, members of the community, and other content highlighting different aspects of life in Port Coquitlam.

One idea for a submission involves holding up an old photo in front of the place it was originally shot, taking a new picture and writing a few sentences about what the photo means to you.

Other ideas include staging the same shot with some of the people in the original photo, or contrasting a then-and-now shot at the same location with people or landscape.

In addition to the art installation, some of the images may be used in future city calendars and publications.

All photos will become the property of the City of Port Coquitlam.

Photos should be submit-ted to www.portcoquitlam. ca/photos in the following format: jpg format, with a file size of at least one megabyte and ideally over two megabytes, a resolution of 300 dpi and a minimum of 1,500 pixels.

Poetry may be uploaded to the webpage as a Word document, and video in .mp4, .avi, .mov or .avi formats. For information or assistance, contact submissions@portcoquitlam.ca or 604-927-8400.
