COQUITLAM — What likely began as a typical day for employees at the Coquitlam School District office turned somewhat tense after a bomb threat was called into the building Monday.

The bomb threat originally came into the Port Moody Police Department just before noon, but Coquitlam Mounties took over the case, temporarily evacuating the office on Poirier Street to search for explosives.

The RCMP dog unit was also called in for the search, but nothing was found, police say.

The entire search lasted less than an hour.

“They searched the place inside and out and no bomb found,” said RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung. “We always take this kind of call seriously, because who knows, there might be a bomb there.”

Police have a suspect in mind, but couldn’t disclose any more information citing privacy laws.

Though the RCMP couldn’t comment on the specific incident, Chung said police tend to take bomb threats more seriously when more information is provided in regards to the specific threat.

He said it was the first such threat to the school district that he could recall.

Chung also added investigators don’t believe the district needs to worry, suggesting the incident was a “one-off” situation.
