COQUITAM — A 13-year-old boy who was struck by an SUV while cycling across Schoolhouse Street Thursday afternoon has died in hospital.
Coqutlam RCMP confirmed the boy died of his injuries Friday morning.
“We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the victim's friends and family," said RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung in a statement.
"We ask for the privacy of the family to be respected in this very tragic event. The victim's name is not being released. Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family through this difficult time."
The accident happened at 2 p.m., at the intersection of Schoolhouse and Lucille Starr Drive by the SilverCity Theatres, but police have released few details on the crash.
Witnesses say the boy was crossing the street with a friend when he was hit by an SUV and thrown several feet.
A pair of bystanders in a nearby business helped provide first aid before emergency crews arrived.
The boy was rushed to hospital, and police later that day upgraded his condition to stable.
Coquitlam RCMP note they don’t believe alcohol or drugs are contributing factors, but the incident is still being investigated.
The driver of the SUV stayed at the scene and was co-operating with police.
