Cities such as Surrey and Coquitlam have one, and soon so will Port Moody.
City council has given the go-ahead to ceremonially rename a street in Port Moody Veterans Way. Though there were several options bandied about, council chose to designate a portion of Kyle Street from St. Johns Street to Clarke Street.
The decision was made in consultation with the executive committee of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 119.
The stretch of Kyle leads to the local cenotaph. According to a staff report, a ceremonial designation is similar to a neighbourhood designation in that the street name would remain the same and a sign would be added to showcase the new designation. The option requires three signs at a total cost of $450.
The report also stated the ceremonial designation is more flexible as it can be changed to meet future needs, noting it is an important consideration if the Remembrance Day parade route is changed due to redevelopment.
The idea of a name change came after Port Moody resident and veterans advocate Guy Black asked council to rename a portion of Hope Street between Williams and Hugh streets.
